Brian Matless - Life President

Brian has been one of the countries top coaches at both foil and epee for many years and is a British Academy of Fencing Coach and level 3 epee coach. He is also our Life President and he has coached numerous fencers to Olympic and international standard in addition to pentathletes and wheelchair fencers. Brain retired from the weekly running of the fencing club in April 2011 but continues to coach elite fencers and pentathletes at the club.

Kate Elvin

Kate is involved in all aspects of the fencing club ensuring it runs smoothly and continues to attract the regions top fencers. Kate has many years fencing experience and is an international epeeist. Kate has won a bronze medal in the World’s and European Veterans Championships . She is a member of the British Academy of Fencing and coaches the junior epee fencers as well as giving individual lessons.

Helen Kay

Helen is responsible for all aspects of running the club together with Kate. She has fenced foil for over 30 years at International, National and County level, coaching foil for 25 years to all ages and abilities and is a level 3 foil coach.


Simon Trevithick

Simon is responsible for developing and delivering our junior foil fencing program.He is alsoleading our our fencing in the community program delivering fencing in schools and to local groups as well as providing taster sessions and promoting fencing at local shows and events.

Sam Sanderson

Sam is the newest member of our coaching team and fenced at the club a number of years ago. He was an international pentathlete and was coached by Brian.Since he retired from competitive sport he has set up a coaching company which he has run full time since 2010 covering Personal training, Sports coaching and athlete management services. 

He is a qualified epee coach,has a level 3 in sports performance and a long list of other qualifications within the sports coaching and fitness industry. In the past he has coached fencing in a number of private schools (Ampleforth College, St.Martins Ampleforth, Cundall manor, Queen Mary’s, Queen Margarets) and most recently he is the National Pentathlon coach of Scottish Pentathlon, the head coach for Yorkshire Pentathlon and on of the pathway coaches for Pentathlon GB. Sam also currently works privately with a few of the fencers that come to Harrogate Fencing Club so do let him know if you have any private coaching enquiries.
